Your July at ABY 🌸

Writer: Cassandra JostesCassandra Jostes

To our dear and valued community,

July in Juneau means late sunsets, nature in full bloom and playing outside, which might mean gathering with friends, climbing a mountain or digging in the garden. At Auke Bay Yoga, we’re crafting opportunities to enhance your summer experiences, to care for your body and tend to the garden of the mind. In this note, read about new classes for hikers, teens, and for receiving extra rest, plus specialized events that invite you to celebrate and restore.

Therapist and meditation teacher Dr. Rick Hanson teaches his clients to imagine that the mind is like a garden. We can simply be with it, observing weeds and flowers without judging or changing anything. Or, we could gently pull the weeds that threaten to take over by learning to decrease unhelpful rumination. We can also choose to grow more flowers by increasing feelings like compassion, resilience, feeling seen and appreciated. This month, we invite you to explore how a therapeutic practice can not only offer strength and flexibility for the physical body, but provides an opportunity to cultivate more beauty in your inner world through the summer months and beyond.

In support of your July, new classes at ABY:

Yoga with Weights- Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30pm

We now offer an evening version of this unique class that blends the embodiment and mindfulness of yoga with the additional strengthening of aligned work with light weights.

Yoga Nidra and Roll, Restore, Explore- Rotating Tuesdays from 7-8:15pm

Immediately following Yoga with weights, enjoy the profound relaxation of the revolving offerings of Yoga Nidra (healing non-sleep deep rest) and Roll, Restore, Explore (deep tissue release with tune-up balls).

“Vin and Yin”- Wednesdays from 5:30-6:45pm

Introducing an experience that combines the dynamic practice of Vinyasa flow, with a selection of sustained stretches and stillness. This class climbs like a ladder before dipping into attention to the inner channels of the body through classic “yin” style postures and deep rest.

Yin Meditation- Friday mornings from 6:30-7:30am

It is taught that the mind is most open to meditation in the early morning hours, so we’re bringing this class back by popular demand. This experience is intended for all levels and offers a chance to linger in gentle, supported postures for a few minutes each alongside an exploration of meditation techniques.

Healthy Hikers Flow- Sunday evenings from 5-6pm

As a special treat to close your active summer weekends, join us for a session that aims to lengthen hard working leg muscles and strengthen neglected lower body stabilizing muscles. A slow flow designed to be accessible for every ability level, “Healthy Hikers Flow” isn’t just for those hitting the trail, but anyone looking for a class focused on lower body connection.

Land Acknowledgement: It is our privilege and honor at Auke Bay Yoga to live, work, and practice here on Lingít Aani, on the unceded territory of the Áak'w Kwáan who have resided in this area since time immemorial, and who have historically been displaced from what we know today as Berners Bay and the Auke Bay areas of D'zantiki Héeni, known by its colonized name of Juneau.

We would also like to recognize our relatives of the Taku River, the T'aaku Kwáan who came to reside at Anax Ya Andagan Ye' otherwise known as South Douglas, without recognizing them would further contribute to the erasure of their very existence and the many contributions they have made to this community in the past, now, and in the future. The T'aaku are our relatives, we care for them, and are thankful for the stewardships they too will continue to make in perpetuity.

Gunalchéesh to the Áak'w Kwáan for your continued stewardship and guidance as we move forward together recognizing the historical and ongoing harms of colonialism. We humbly give thanks to the land and its ancestors for their wisdom, strength, and generosity. May we honor and protect this sacred earth together for generations to come.
