Injury Proofing and Practical Anatomy with Leslie Pearlman and Leslie Hopkins, February 7-9, 2025

This weekend module is designed for yoga instructors who want to deepen their understanding of anatomy through a hands-on, experiential approach. This is a learn-by-feeling training. Using therapy ball rolling and yoga poses, participants will explore the body from the inside out,

developing a practical and intuitive understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and common injuries so your classes are safe, healing, non-injurious, and pain-free (bye-bye feeling like an imposter).

● Therapy Ball Rolling for Body Mapping: Learn to feel the body's musculature, fascia, and joint structures. By applying pressure through rolling, gain real-time feedback about tension patterns, areas of restriction, and where injuries may commonly arise.

● Therapy Ball Rolling for Muscle and Fascia Exploration: Target key muscle groups and fascia lines, and learn the functions of the tissues while simultaneously feeling how these structures operate in the body.

● Therapy Ball Rolling for Sensory Awareness and Proprioception: Tune into sensory feedback and develop a heightened awareness of joint mobility, muscle length, and overall body mechanics.

● Yoga Poses to Understand Functional Anatomy: Explore the most common yoga poses as a framework for understanding the mechanics of movement, alignment, and injury prevention. Study how different muscle groups engage, stretch, and stabilize the body.

● Active Application of Anatomy: Break down key yoga poses to identify which muscles are lengthening, contracting, or stabilizing. Demystify how the body functions as an integrated system.

● Injury Awareness: Understand common yoga-related injuries (e.g., rotator cuff strain, lower back pain) and how to work in a healing way.

● Somatic Learning: Practical learning (feeling it in your body) is the best way to understand the relationship between structural alignment, functional movement, and injury prevention.

● Integration into Teaching: Learn how to translate this embodied knowledge into teaching cues, class themes, and injury modifications for students of all levels.

Land Acknowledgement: It is our privilege and honor at Auke Bay Yoga to live, work, and practice here on Lingít Aani, on the unceded territory of the Áak'w Kwáan who have resided in this area since time immemorial, and who have historically been displaced from what we know today as Berners Bay and the Auke Bay areas of D'zantiki Héeni, known by its colonized name of Juneau.

We would also like to recognize our relatives of the Taku River, the T'aaku Kwáan who came to reside at Anax Ya Andagan Ye' otherwise known as South Douglas, without recognizing them would further contribute to the erasure of their very existence and the many contributions they have made to this community in the past, now, and in the future. The T'aaku are our relatives, we care for them, and are thankful for the stewardships they too will continue to make in perpetuity.

Gunalchéesh to the Áak'w Kwáan for your continued stewardship and guidance as we move forward together recognizing the historical and ongoing harms of colonialism. We humbly give thanks to the land and its ancestors for their wisdom, strength, and generosity. May we honor and protect this sacred earth together for generations to come.
